Maureen Johnson
soprano

Maureen has been singing in various venues since elementary school in Orchard Park, NY. Because of her love of music, her entire childhood was filled with voice, piano, and dance lessons and rehearsals for various school productions and marching band performances.  Upon acceptance to the United States Coast Guard Academy following high school, Maureen embarked on a four-year journey through military college where she continued to pursue musical opportunities.  A member of the pit percussion section of the Windjammers Drum and Bugle Corps, lead vocalist for the Nitecaps Jazz Band, a season singing soprano with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus, and lead roles as Guenevere in Camelot and Grace in Annie kept her musically fulfilled until her 2001 graduation with high honors with a Bachelors of Science in Marine and Environmental Sciences.

Following graduation, Maureen reported aboard a Coast Guard Cutter in Miami, FL, and spent two years as a Deck Watch Officer conducting law enforcement, drug interdiction, and migrant interdiction operations in the Caribbean Sea.  Following that tour of duty, Maureen was transferred to Marine Safety Office San Francisco.  The following four years had Maureen busily performing safety, security, and environmental compliance inspections on both marine terminals and foreign flagged commercial vessels that conducted trade in San Francisco, and culminated with her becoming the Chief of Foreign Vessel Inspections at Sector San Francisco.   During this time, Maureen also took advantage of the Bay Area’s bustling music scene, and performed in numerous musical productions with Alameda Civic Light Opera, including Aida, Jesus Christ Superstar, Man of La Mancha, and Broadway’s Greatest Moments II.

Currently an Active Duty Lieutenant, another call from the Coast Guard brought Maureen and her husband to Juneau in the summer of 2007, where she has already begun finding a place in the music community.  Recent performances include Juneau Lyric Opera’s Mid-Summer and Mid-Winter Vocal Festivals and Juneau Pride Chorus’s Winter 2007 concert.  Maureen is very excited to be performing in her first opera, Dido and Aeneas with Opera to Go!
